Expanding Architecture: Design as Activism

A lecture by Bryan Bell, founder and director of Design Corps.

Design Corps provides architecture and planning services including initiatives to provide affordable housing in poor, rural communities including hurricane resistant housing for migrant workers in Florida.

Founded in 1991, Design Corps’ mission is to create positive change in communities by providing architecture and planning services. Through its current projects and past projects, Design Corps provides affordable architectural services to those currently underserved by traditional architecture practices.

Bryan Bell is the editor of Expanding Architecture: Design as Activism, published by Metropolis Books. He received a 2007 National Honor Award for Collaborative Practice from the American Institute of Architects. Design Corps co-hosts an annual conference that addresses design for the underserved called Structures for Inclusion. Bryan Bell is author of two collections of essays, including the recent Good Deeds, Good Design: Community Service through Architecture, Princeton Architectural Press. He will be a Loeb Fellow at Harvard next year.

The work of Design Corps was featured in the Smithsonian's Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum exhibit National Design Triennial: Design Culture Now, and in The New York Times, Newsweek, Architecture, Metropolis, Readymade, Dwell Magazine, and Architectural Record.
