Gathering presents artworks by three esteemed architects and architectural pieces by three contemporary artists. The resulting exhibition yields a thought-provoking crossroads, where creative formats intermingle and boundaries bend.
Gyorgy Kepes, PaintingsWhen:On view through August 21, 2010Where:Castle Hill Center for the Arts. Gallery hours 10am – 4pm, Monday – Friday. Admission is free. Kepes' vivid, symbolic paintings are passed down like talismans, often found in the homes of movers and shakers from the modern era. The rarely viewed works in Paintings are on loan from the Kepes family.Gyorgy Kepes, Hungarian-born painter, designer, educator and art theorist emigrated to the U.S. in 1937. He taught design at the New Bauhaus in Chicago and in 1967 founded the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, where he taught until his retirement in 1974. Kepes was an intimate friend and collaborator to Bauhaus veteran Laslo Moholy-Nagy, as well as architects Serge Chermayeff and Marcel Breuer. Breuer designed Kepes a house, identical to his own, in Wellfleet in 1948, where his family still lives.
